Practical AI Help for Locals

AI is here.

Its moving quickly. It's brilliant. And I think everyone should have a chance to cash in. I want to help businesses & individuals understand: what it means, where it can help, how to protect ourselves and our children from it AND how to start getting it working for ourselves without getting lost in the minefield.

I'm Gareth Reid, a Mornington local with a long background in software engineering, automation, bioinforatics & data science, AI and complex workflow engineering. With the With 2 young kids, just starting primary school, I want to be IN the community more. If I knew how to be a local mechanic I would do that.

But I dont.

I've spent much of my career working behind the scenes building solutions to complex problems in hospitals, clinical pathology & genomics labs, cancer research, personalised medicine and the 'businesslike' biopharmaceutical environments - at companies such as Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, CSL and Mater Hospital in Brisbane.

Now im hoping to avoid the city and ply my trade in my local area - solving, supporting, training and helping anyone who wants to see what's possible using A.I, Automation and a bit of clever process engineering to assist our businesses AND ourselves, to solve complex problems; build better solutions, create and power new apps and generally; complete tasks that we don't have the time, desire, ability OR know-how, to complete ourselves.

What I'm Trying To Do

AI is not just for big tech companies. Used sensibly, it can help smaller businesses, and even individuals, reduce manual work, improve communication, understand their data, respond faster, create better documentation and operate with more confidence & efficiency.

My aim is to help local businesses take part in the AI boom without being overwhelmed by it.

It is about sitting down, understanding how your business actually runs, and looking for practical ways to save time, reduce manual admin, improve data visibility, analyse operations or make day-to-day work easier.

Start small. Understand the value. Only build what actually helps or saves time & money.

If I cannot see a clear way for AI, automation or data science to significantly benifit you or your business, I will tell you.

I can help you:

  • Understand what AI actually is — without the hype
  • Work out where it fits your business (and where it doesn't)
  • Avoid wasting money on the wrong tools
  • Reduce repetitive admin and manual work
  • Improve reporting and day-to-day visibility
  • Train staff to use AI safely and sensibly
  • Build simple, useful tools where they make sense

AI Help for Local Businesses

Many businesses do not need a complicated AI strategy. They need someone to help answer a few simple questions:

What is AI actually useful for in a business?
What is AI actually useful for in my business?
What tools should I be looking at?
Are my staff using AI safely?
Could I automate some of this admin?
Can AI help with marketing, hiring, reporting or documentation?
Is there anything I should avoid?
What would be a sensible first step?
Getting Started with AI

Understanding the Tools That Are Out There

If you are curious about tools like ChatGPT, Claude, AI image and design platforms, AI marketing tools, words like agentic AI, 'Humans In The Loop' and hullucinations or how companies like Google, AWS and OpenAI, Anthropic, SnowFlake fit into the picture, I can help explain what they do, where they are useful, and where they can cause problems if used carelessly.

  • Setting up and getting started with AI tools
  • Showing practical business use cases — for your specific type of business
  • Creating reusable prompts and templates
  • Explaining limitations and risks in plain English
  • Training you or your staff, at whatever level makes sense
  • Creating simple AI usage guidelines for your team
  • Showing what not to put into AI tools (this matters)
Reducing Manual Work

Saving Hours You Didn't Know You Were Losing

Most businesses have repetitive tasks that quietly chew up hours every week. I can help look for practical ways to reduce that manual work.

Admin processes
Job applications and hiring workflows
HR onboarding
Customer enquiries
Quote requests
Follow-up emails
Document generation
Scheduling
File organisation
Reporting
Internal approvals
Day-to-day operational tracking

Sometimes the solution is a simple spreadsheet improvement. Sometimes it is a form, dashboard, AI assistant, small web tool or workflow automation. The right answer depends on the business.

Business Reporting and Data

Making Sense of the Information You Already Have

A lot of businesses already have useful information sitting in spreadsheets, finance systems, booking tools, CRMs or email threads — but it is hard to see what is really going on. I can help turn that information into clearer reporting.

  • Sales summaries and trends
  • Customer behaviour and repeat business insights
  • Job or workflow tracking
  • Operational dashboards
  • Marketing performance
  • Staff or workload visibility
  • Simple forecasting
  • Monthly management reports
Marketing, Websites and Content

AI-Assisted Marketing That Actually Sounds Like You

AI can help with marketing, but only if it is guided properly. Otherwise it tends to produce generic content that sounds like everyone else.

  • Website copy and service descriptions
  • Local directory profiles (Google Business, etc.)
  • Social media ideas and content calendars
  • Customer emails and newsletters
  • FAQs and common question responses
  • Blog and article ideas based on your customers' questions
  • AI-assisted content workflows you can keep running yourself
  • Simple landing pages or website builds
  • Practical marketing systems you can maintain yourself
Workflow and Documentation

Capturing How Your Business Actually Works

I also have access to simple tools that can help turn messy processes into clearer workflows and documentation.

  • Standard operating procedures
  • Onboarding guides for new staff
  • Internal process maps
  • Customer intake steps
  • Service delivery workflows
  • Internal knowledge bases
  • Business continuity notes
Many businesses rely on one or two people "just knowing how things work." Good documentation reduces that pressure — and makes the business easier to hand over, scale, or step back from. AI can create and maintain this for you - to any level of compliance you require.
Where to Start

As Simple or as Advanced as You Like

You do not need to know exactly what you want.

Some businesses may want some demos or training/eduction. Others may want a custom admin team, real-time reporting dashboards, automation workflows, website updates, staff training session or internal documentation system.

You may find a team of specially trained AI agents can prepare and submit your BAS, take & reschedule bookings, reshuffle the christmas party budget based on resultant tax bill, all whilst analysing operations and proposing ways optimise. All whilst you are makng a coffee.

All are good. The point is to start.

Help for Individuals and Families Too

While this page is mainly aimed at local businesses, I'm also happy to help individuals, families or community members who simply want to understand AI better.

Many people have heard of tools like ChatGPT but have never really used them — even though they could genuinely help with everyday tasks. If you are curious but unsure where to start, I can provide a simple, patient walkthrough and show practical examples that suit your life, not just a business.

Practical, Local and Value-Based

I'm not trying to sell large corporate projects to small businesses that do not need them.

Start with a free review — no commitment required
Explain things clearly, without jargon
Look for practical, tangible value before recommending anything
Keep the first step small and low-risk
Avoid unnecessary complexity
Only build what is genuinely useful
Keep cost proportional to the benefit
If I can see a way to save you time, reduce manual work, improve reporting or make something easier — I'll explain it clearly.

If I cannot, I'll say that too.

About Gareth

I'm Gareth Reid, a Mornington local, dad of young kids at Mornington Primary School, and someone who has spent a long time solving technical problems for larger organisations.

I've spent much of my career working behind the scenes in critical healthcare, pathology, cancer research and biopharmaceutical environments, including Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and CSL. In plain English, that means I've helped build systems that connect people, instruments, software and data — reducing manual work, improving reporting, supporting complex workflows and using modern AI-style tools to make problem-solving faster and more practical.

I'm now taking some time away from the corporate hustle and using those skills closer to home — particularly for businesses and people across the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria and surrounding areas.

I know a lot of local businesses are hearing about AI and wondering whether they are falling behind. I also know many do not want to be talked down to, buried in jargon or sold an expensive system before they understand what they actually need.

My aim is to offer something more useful: a local, practical, plain-English way to understand AI and apply it where it genuinely helps.

Good First Questions

A good starting point might be one of these:

Can AI save me time?
What should I be using ChatGPT for?
Can I automate this admin process?
Can I make reporting easier?
Can AI help with marketing?
Are my staff using AI safely?
Could I build a simple tool for this?
Is this worth spending money on?
Could AI help me with everyday admin or planning?
Could someone show me how to use it safely and properly?
If you are asking any of those questions, a free review is probably worthwhile.
